DIY: Transform a Skirt into a Strapless Peplum Blouse

Photo1201_Fotor_Collage_Fotor2

I love clothes, I love finding unique pieces that are cute and versatile. However, in this economic climate, sustaining my love of tea length skirts and peplum blouses are not top ten on my monthly budget. I, like most fashionistas-in-the-making are on a tight budget. With this hurdle, I have to either do without my retail fix, or find new cheap ways of making it happen, the answer…DIY!

Yes honey (in my Tamar voice), DIY is here to the rescue! I thank God for the day Pintrest was created. There are so many DIY projects just waiting to be attempted. I am not particularly crafty, but I am good with my hands, and I love turning things I envision into reality. I haven’t really attempted a project of this nature before, I was anxiously excited.

I wasn’t too sure how it would turn out, but I tried. And I loved the end result, you will too with a little effort and patience. If I did it, so can you! Here are the steps:

Step # 1 – Select the right Skirt

Select a skirt that is at least 1 ½ times the size of your breast. The skirt you choose must also be long enough to make the frilly peplum ends. The skirt fabric should be one that would not unravel when cut. I chose polyester – cotton blend fabric.

Photo1160_Fotor

Step # 2 – Remove waist and zipper from Skirt

I chose a skirt with an elastic waist, so there was no hassle removing the waist. If you have another type of difficult-to-remove-waist in your skirt, simply cut off the waist completely. After removing the waist, remove the zipper gently. Keep the zipper; you may be able to reuse it.

Elastic

This should be the result:

  Photo1172

Step # 3 – Cut the Bodice and bottom of Peplum

Cut the fabric in two halves – One for the bodice and the other for the peplum. To get a snug fit, ensure that you do an accurate measurement of your bust.

Photo1173

Measure your bust and add 2 inches on each side (back & front) for the zipper and other adjustments. Ensure that the bodice stops at the navel. To cut the bottom part of the peplum blouse, get a similar peplum blouse; trace the peplum on your cut fabric, cut as accurately as possible. Your finished product should look like a semi-circle when folded, and a full circle with a little circle in the middle when opened.

circle

Step # 4 – Add Zipper and Darts to bodice

Use the top half of the skirt for the bodice, iron out all previous hems. Cut the fabric at the seams, one for the front of the blouse and the other for the back. Cut the back part in half to make room for the zipper, here is a great zipper tutorial.

 Photo1186

The zipper should be facing down, this makes it easier to put on and off. After adding the zipper, join both pieces of fabric.

Photo1190

Fold the fabric about half inch for the facing, iron the fold to ensure accuracy. Hem the facing.

Photo1177

Try on the bodice to ensure that everything is in order. If it fits snugly, proceed to add the peplum, if not, add darts to give a better fit, here is a great dart tutorial.

Step # 5: Connect Peplum to Bodice

Photo1193

Turn the bodice and peplum inside out. Sew the peplum to the base of the bodice. Ensure that the stitch that you use is secure enough to prevent separation of the top and bottom pieces. Cut the peplum at one of the seams (you should have two semi-circles connected at one end). Start sewing one side of the peplum to the bodice where the zipper starts. Leave about an inch for heming. Sew until the peplum is completely connected. An opening should be at the back of the blouse to facilitate the zipper.

Step # 6: Enjoy Your New Creation

Photo1199

I love this piece, not only because I sew it by hand but because it is very cute and goes it almost everything.

I absolutely love my new strapless peplum blouse. I paired it with black jean, flip flops, red nails, and a pop of shimmer with my silver necklace and silver hoops (not visible).

finish

Black and White is very versatile, it can be paired with black pencil skirt and heels, red skirt or red jeans, yellow, basically any color you can think of.

I hope your peplum blouse turned out as great as mine did!

The Sheath Dress

The Sheath dress is a type of dress that’s closely fitted to the body, its name is derived from its fit and silhouette. It is relatively unadorned, it usually fall on the knees or lower thighs. It has a straight, simple silhouette, defined waist and a skirt that fits snugly-either straight or pencil. A sheath dress elongates the body and suits just about every body type. It is very versatile and can be worn just about anywhere.

This type of dress gives the wearer an elegant lady like look that is hard to mimic with other types of dresses. Michelle Obama and Jackie Kennedy Onassis is/were avid sheath dress wearers. They’re able to wear this type of dress to any event and never look dull or repetitive.

A sheath, because it can be worn year-round, is a practical item to have in your wardrobe. A solid or multicolored sheath is perfect for the office, a business dinner, or even church. A lower cut more risqué sheath can be worn on a date, a girl’s night out, dinner with friends, or a banquet etc.

Here are a few ways to wear your sheath dress.

Layered

Sheath Dress w Blazer

A sheath dress is a perfect platform with which you can explore your fashion skills. A sheath layered with a blazer transforms your simple dress into a chic, stylish outfit. Layering should not be limited to blazers, explore, add a scarf or a cardigan to breathe new life into your sheath.

Belted

Belted Sheath

Adding a belt to any dress instantaneously transforms it. Belting ads definition and brings attention to and accentuate the waist giving the wearer the illusion of having the enviable hour glass silhouette.

 With Statement Shoe

Sheath with Statment Shoe

Any outfit can be made better with a statement shoe. A statement shoe is the focal point of the outfit, it should stand out, as such, other accessories should be mild and understated. A statement shoe gives the sheath dress a more edgy, glamorous look.

Printed

Printed Sheath

A printed sheath dress suits any body type, as it is perfect for disguising any problem area(s). When selecting a print, ensure that it is not too busy or over crowed. The accessories with which you pair this sheath, should be understated or non-existent. The dress should be the focal point, adding too much of or the wrong accessories my cause the outfit to look frumpy or way too busy.

With Bold Accessories

Sheath With Bright Accesories

As stated earlier, a sheath is a perfect canvas (because of its design and silhouette), as such a simple sheath, can be paired with bright bold accessories to add dimension and character to your outfit. It is advised that you choose a complimentary color or colors that enhance the dress instead of creating a messy tragedy.

However you decide to wear your Sheath, have fun with it!

You can never go wrong with a sun dress, as it suits all body types and is available in various colors and styles. It is perfect for evening strolls, an afternoon date, for a visit to the beach or just to hang out with friends.

Rompers

Rompers are in my view, a remix to the classic jumper. A romper is similar to the sun dress as it is easy to wear, fun and flirty. A romper, unlike the sun dress is more versatile in that it can be worn to almost anything. A romper can be worn to a dinner (if done correctly) a party, a day at the beach, a date, to hang out with friends, just about anywhere.

Colored Jeans

Jeans, be it skinny, boyfriend or baggy, are always in. A jean is that dynamic versatile piece of garment a girl cannot live without. Jeans can be worn to anything anytime. For spring, however, the colored jeans are more suitable as they are fun and vibrant and give an easy breezy feel that is synonymous to and essential for spring.

Maxi Dresses

Maxi Dress

Maxi dress are fast becoming popular, it made its first appearance in 1968 and has become a spring/summer staple. It is a little more formal than a sun dress. It is still categorized as informal/casual, but depending on the design, it can be worn formally. A maxi dress differs from a sun dress because a maxi dress is typically long and a sun dress isn’t. Maxi dresses add a cool easy yet sophisticated air that is essential for those spring escapades we hope to have 😉 . A maxi dress is very versatile as it comes in a myriad of colors and patterns; it looks good on basically anyone.

Regardless of your choice of attire this spring, make sure that you have a warm time – pun intended 🙂

Looking Good Has Nothing to do With What you Wear

It is often said that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Beauty and looking good is subjective and means different things to different people. Just look at some of the runway shows. They have the weirdest ‘couture’ outfits that to me are hideous! …I know designers make ‘ready to wear’ and ‘couture’ outfits, but have you ever seen anyone in a ‘couture’ outfit walking down the street? …the importance and necessity of ‘couture’ outfits vary based on the person you ask…

…looking good is similar to wearing couture outfits…to some people you are the hottest most fashionable thing, and to others, you look like a hot mess!…Everyone has their fabulous days and not-so-fabulous days…I was on my way to work one day, I felt good!…You know those days when you feel sexy confident and on top of the world?…yeah, that was my day, I was strutting my stuff, I was wearing an outfit that I have worn a million times. While walking, I realize that everyone started staring at me, they were looking at me from head to toe, it was not just two people, it was almost everyone I passed, both men and women. So naturally, I started to wonder what they were staring at, I checked my teeth and my hair. I couldn’t figure out what it was. I wasn’t wearing a ‘fabulous’ outfit, I looked normal… I couldn’t find anything wrong… I later realized that they were not looking at what I was wearing but how I was wearing it…I was confident and comfortable in what I was wearing and that was what stood out…

…Looking good is 90% confidence!…some people can wear a garbage bag and still look fabulous. It doesn’t matter what you wear, but HOW you wear it!

Being confident has nothing to do with what you are wearing, it is innate, it is how you carry and present yourself.

Shoegasm: 7 Shoes Every Woman Should Own

There are a few things every woman has in common: emotions (sometimes too much :)), the need for love and the love for fabulous footwear. Your choice of shoes may result in a fabulous outfit or a not-to-be-repeated disaster! Shoes can make or break an outfit!…We are bombarded with a huge variety from which to choose as such we oftentimes get confused and a lot of times, make choices that are not so cute or severely impractical.

Many women cannot afford to buy shoes of varying styles and colors; we have to buy shoes that will go for miles, shoes that are cute, comfortable, stylish and versatile.

Want to know which shoes you should own? …Not to worry, I got you covered: …

Ballet Flats

Wedges

Wedges

I love wedges, they are extremely versatile. They are a must have because they have the ability to add casual sophistication to any outfit. Wedges come in a variety of colors, styles and design, making it super easy to add that extra oomph needed to create a spectacular outfit. The heel and platform of wedges are wide and thick, making it easy for high-heel-challenged-walkers to be able to balance and walk comfortably and confidently.

Black/Nude Pumps

Black/Nude Pump

Every professional and non-professional woman should have a nude of black pump. It is as necessary as the little black dress. A black or nude pump gives that polished ladylike look that is essential for work, a business meeting or an interview etc. Black/nude is versatile as it can be paired with virtually anything. It is argued that nude is the new black, but I beg to differ. Although it is hip and stylish, a nude shoe in my opinion cannot replace a black one. Black is an all time classic. If you can afford to have both, way to go, but if you are to choose one, black is the way to go.

Fabulous Red Heels

Red Heels

OMG! I love red shoes, especially red high ones. They to me represent the sexy confident woman, although I do not own a pair…yet, a red high heeled shoe is the shoe to be worn when you want to turn heads or just feel confident, feminine and damn sexy. Red heels are essential as it super versatile; it can be paired with almost anything. Red can also act as the perfect accent color esp. for black & white, black, and white outfits.

With the variety of styles available, you are able to demonstrate your chic, effortless style wherever you go.

Cute Casual Sneaker

 Cute Sneaker

This one is a must have for those rough, not-so-cute days, or for those days when you just want to go low-key, or for the days when your pedicure is less than desirable (we all have those :)). A cute casual sneaker like Converse or All Stars can add a chic, boyish vibe to your outfit. It is perfect for football games, a supermarket run, a rainy day or just to go strolling in your neighborhood. A casual sneaker can be worn by anyone and can be paired with jeans, leggings, short shorts or skirts.

The Freakum Shoe

In the words of Beyonce, “every woman should have a freakum dress”! This shoe should be a special shoe; it should be the shoe in which you feel your sexiest. In it, you are your most confident, fabulous self. When you put this shoe on, you should own it! You should feel like you are on top of the world…so you can get your freakum on!…naturally! 🙂

Does the Color you Wear Affect your Mood?

At my most depressing and down times I find myself unconsciously wearing dull colors, when I’m in a good mood, I wear bright colors…although I didn’t realize it, the color you wear affects and influences your mood. When I look back at old photos, I can tell the times I was sad, happy, depressed etc. simply by my color choices…and it amazed me, color does influence and affects your mood.

One may ask why is color so important, why does it consciously or unconsciously influence our mood. The answer, according to color specialist Leatrice Eiseman, how colors affect us correlates to that colors behavior in nature. Eiseman explains, “We have a repository of information about a color. For example, the color blue is almost always associated with blue skies, which when we are children is a positive thing – it means playing outside and fun. Evolutionarily it also means there are no storms to come. This is why it is reminds us of stability and calm.”

Color choices vary by gender, race, age, religion and cultural background. Each color is believed to have a particular meaning.

Here is a breakdown of the major colors and their meaning, and how you can modify your outfits to suit the message you wish to send or the mood you want to have.

Black

Traditionally, black is a color that means grief, sophistication, or fear, it is the color of authority and power. It is considered to be a fashion staple as it makes the wearer appear thinner, and let’s face it, who doesn’t want to look skinner. It is the color you should wear if you want to give off a classic or timeless vibe. Black also implies submission as priests wear black to signify submission to God. Black outfits can also make the wearer appear overpowering, aloof or evil.

All Black Everything

Red

Red is the most emotionally intense color, as it stimulates a faster heartbeat and breathing. It is empowering as it draws attention to the wearer. Red is the color of love, romance and passion, making it perfect for date nights. Red is extreme, it is not a color you should wear for an important business meeting. Red is also said to make the wearer appear heavier and improves appetite – so if you are on a diet, avoid it.

red

White

White is a color many brides wear, it is a color that connotes purity, happiness, peace, innocence, simplicity, and cleanliness. Technically speaking, white is not a color, but the manifestation of the presence of all color – the complete energy of light. White it the best worn on hot days as unlike black, it reflects heat, making you feel cool. White is the perfect color to pair other colors such as red or yellow with, it brings to life any color you pair it with.

white

Blue

The color that increases creativity, blue is one of the most popular colors; it is the complete opposite to red, as it is peaceful, tranquil and causes the body to produce calming chemicals such as serotonin. Blue can also be cold, depressing and a little standoffish. It is recommended by fashion experts that you wear blue to a job interview as it symbolizes loyalty. You however may want to stay away from blue if you are feeling down as blue is said to make you feel well…blue.

blue

Yellow

The color of sunlight, yellow symbolizes jealousy, intelligence, optimism, inspiration, competence and happiness, it is the color that cheers you up and improves your mood. Being the most difficult color for the eyes to take in, it is advised to wear yellow in moderation, so wearing a bright yellow suit, maybe a little too much. Yellow provides clarity for decision-making, relief from ‘burnout’, panic, nervousness and exhaustion; sharpen memory and concentration skills, provides protection from lethargy and depression during dull weather.

yellow

Green

Symbolizing nature, good taste, calm and envy, green is the color to wear if you want to reduce stress and improves relaxation. It is the easiest color on the eye, and is said to improve vision. Dark green however, is masculine, conservative, and implies wealth while Grass green is restful. Green symbolizes self-respect and well being; it is the color of balance. It also means learning, growth and harmony. Green is a safe color, if you don’t know what color to use anywhere use green.

green

Purple

Connoting luxury, wealth, creativity, spirituality, authority, intuition and sophistication, purple is the color of royalty. Being the combination of red and blue, the warmest and coolest colors, purple is believed to be the ideal color. Like red, it is stimulating and boosts energy levels. Wear purple if you want to feel whimsical, feminine or romantic – it is a perfect color to be worn for a date.

purple

Pink

Ok, pink is a girly girl color, many man swear never to wear it, but you know what they say, it takes a real man to wear pink :)…pink is a color that connotes sophistication, caring, tenderness, self-worth, love, acceptance, sincerity, femininity, happiness and romance. Shades of deep pink, such as magenta, are effective in neutralizing disorder and violence. Because it connotes femininity, it a color to be worn when you want to feel flirty and bring out your inner girl, it is also a good choice for dates.

An earthy color, brown connotes reliability, sadness and wistfulness. Light brown implies genuineness while dark brown is more solid, rugged and stable; men are more keen to say brown is their favorite color, for obvious reasons. Too much brown can make a dull effect. Brown allows one to stay in the background, unnoticed. Some shades of brown create a warm, comfortable feeling of wholesomeness, naturalness and dependability.

brown

Orange

Having the ability to make the wearer feel positive and energetic, orange is associated with the benign warmth of the sun, vitality and endurance. It is a power and healing color, it is said to increase the craving for food, stimulates enthusiasm and creativity. What Your Shoes Say About You

I’m a Shoeholic! (like many women), I love shoes, I love to wear them, I love to look at them, I love seeing people in beautiful shoes, when I see women (and sometimes men), my eyes go to the feet first!. If it was possible, my shoe closet would look like this:

mariah closet

…But it’s not possible; unfortunately:(…By perpetually looking at women (and sometimes men) in their shoes, I realized that you can tell a lot about a person, by the shoe they wear. I’ve gotten to a point where I can give a little synopsis of a person just by looking at their shoes, and more times than not, I’m spot on…I believe in ‘Shoe-Analogy’…oh wow!, I just coined a word! …or is it a phrase?! :)…!

It may not be called ‘Shoe-Analogy’ but it is believed that you can actually tell who a person is by their shoes…a research was done at the University of Kansas and published in the Journal of Research in Personality, revealed that “people can accurately judge 90 percent of a stranger’s personality simply by looking at the person’s shoes” the research further stated that “Shoes convey a thin but useful slice of information about their wearers, Shoes serve a practical purpose, and also serve as nonverbal cues with symbolic messages. People tend to pay attention to the shoes they and others wear. The style, value, colour and condition of the footwear can paint a picture of the owner’s emotional, political and other vital personality traits”. The research further revealed that:

1. Obvious clues:

a. Expensive shoes suggest high earners:

expensive shoe1 expensive shoe2

expensive shoe3

b. Flashy, colorful pairs belong to extroverts:

colorful3 colorful2

c. Shoes that may not be new but are immaculate belong to conscientious types.

worn worn1

2. Other clues are less obvious:

a. Practical and functional shoes belong to agreeable people.

So it’s a fact that ‘Shoe Analogy’ does exist! 🙂 You can actually tell who a person is by the type of shoe they wear…so, do you see your personality trait being demonstrated above? Do you believe the statements above are true? If you do or don’t, leave a comment, let me know what you think.
